Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh of UPMC is one of three medical centers funded by Pennsylvania’s Division of Maternal and Child Health to receive newborn sickle cell screening test results. Since 1978, Children’s has been identifying children with sickle cell disease and providing children and parents with counseling, follow-up care and further genetic testing. Currently, Children’s hematologists and oncologists care for 200 children, teens and young adults up to 21 years of age with sickle cell disease. Site Santonio Holmes III and Long Foundation Santonio Holmes established The III & Long Foundation, A Fund of The Pittsburgh Foundation in March of 2009.  III & Long is in honor of his son, Santonio III, who suffers from Sickle Cell Disease (SCD).  Holmes understands the difficulties that face families that have been affected by the disease.  “As a parent of someone who has been diagnosed with SCD, I know how expensive the hospital bills and the medication can be.  My goal is to help families that cannot afford the medication by giving grants to charities that assist those particular individuals.” Site
